Baby Jo Memorial Tournament

The 2010 Baby Jo Memorial Tournament

At UMKC

Saturday, January 23 - Monday, January 25, 2010

The UMKC Debate Team is excited to invite you to attend the first annual Baby Jo Memorial Debate Tournament at UMKC. We are striving to provide a high quality debate experience including quality competition, quality schedule, and good food. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to accommodate your attendance.

Relevant Debate Information

We plan to offer 7 preliminary debates on the 2009-2010 CEDA/NDT topic in an three divisions. Divisions that do not have enough teams to sustain 7 rounds may be reduced to 6 rounds.

The time limits are 9-3-6 with 16 minutes Alternate Use Time.

• Judges must assign a winner and loser in each round. If that doesn't occur within a reasonable time frame the tab room will decide.

• All teams with a 4-3 record or better will advance to elimination rounds.

• All preliminary debates and the first elimination debate will be held on the UMKC Campus. The rest of the rounds will be at the hotel.

• We will use a 30 point scale

• We will hopefully be using the debateresults software to pair rounds and accept online ballots as well as emailed schedules etc.

Fees

$100 per team. This will include a wide range of hospitality and awards. Fees will cover breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on Sunday and breakfast on Monday. You will only have to purchase ONE meal during the tournament – Dinner on Saturday!

Judging

Each school is expected to provide one judge per two teams they bring. There are 7 rounds so a 1/2 commitment is 4 rounds. Each judge that you bring will be in for a minimum of 3 rounds (exceptions will be made on a per-case basis to accommodate specific circumstances). Each judge will be obligated for the first full elimination round and one round beyond the elimination of their team. We have some hired judges that we can provide, but not many. Hired judges will be given on a first come, first served basis at a fee of $30 per round. We would much rather have your judges than your money. If you have extra judges available from your school please let me know as we would probably like to hire them. All judges are expected to render a decision in a timely fashion and designate one, and only one, team as the winner of the debate. We plan on utilizing mutual preference judging. You will be able to enter your preference sheets online at www.debateresults.com.

Transportation

For regional squads – parking will be available on campus. There is some street parking at the hotel, but you may have to pay a small fee. For out-of-region squads. The Kansas City International Airport is large and usually a cheap destination. We are committed to making the tournament accessible to you. We will have shuttle service to/from the airport and to/from the tournament each day. The campus is near the country club plaza and the hotel is within walking distance of both. This means that you can eat dinner at a wide variety of restaurants and walk back to the hotel each night. We will shuttle evidence on Friday night and Sunday night.

Hotel Information

The tournament hotel is not finalized yet. However, it is likely the Marriott – Country Club Plaza. This is a fantastic hotel, and it is close to the school and food. The rate is likely $99/night for up to 4 people.

Entry Information

We will be utilizing the Jon Bruschke online entry system. Online entry can be accessed at http://debateresults.com
