    • Learn about exciting and stimulating new topics.
    • Meet people from throughout the country.

How much work is involved?

For novices, most of the work will be learning about debate. Evidence will be provided, and coaches will schedule time with each debater to teach the students what to expect.

What is debate like?

Debate is an organized argumentation/advocacy activity that uses evidence and logic. There are structured rounds where two person teams compete against other two person teams from other schools. There is a trained and experienced critic that adjudicates the round.

Will I be debating against people with a lot more experience?

No. There are several divisions at each tournament, and novices only compete against other novices. The judges are aware of your experience level and will help to make the experience fun and educational at all times.

How do I join?

People who are interested should contact Matt Vega at vegam@umkc.edu or by phone at 816-235-1667. You should also fill out the online squad application.
