How do I get a student organization started at UMKC?

First, scroll through our list of student organizations to make sure that the student organization you wish to set up does not exist. If it does not currently exist, please download an Application for Student Organization Recognition from the Student Organizations website at www.umkc.edu/studo under the Forms section.

Must I really list the ten supporting students’ ID numbers?

Yes. That is the only way we can verify their current status as UMKC students. The application form will not be considered complete if the numbers are not on the form.

What other documentation is needed besides the application form?

The following documents must be in the application packet submitted to the Student Life Office:

What are the four statements required on the constitution?

Please refer to the sample constitution located on the SGA website www.umkc.edu/sga. It is located on the documents page and then under "guides". The four statements are:

  • Membership and activities are open to all currently enrolled students regardless of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, or Vietnam era veteran’s status.
  • A qualified faculty, staff, or community member must be selected by the membership as an advisor.
  • The books of account shall be kept up to date and open to the inspection of the University auditor.
  • It is further understood that if this organization desires at any time in the future to change in any way the provisions of this charter, that before such action is taken, the organization will submit for approval to the Student Government Association and the Student Life Office every detail of the desired changes to be made.

When will my student organization be recognized?

New student organizations will be officially recognized and entitled to all privileges of a recognized student organization after their constitution has been approved by the SGA Constitution Committee. The committee meets every two weeks before the SGA Senate meeting on Wednesdays.
