Haiti - Maison de Naissance
Maternal and newborn mortality rates in
Haiti are the highest in the Western hemisphere and among the
highest in the world. One in every 10 pr egnancies
results with death of either the mother or the newborn. Lifelong
disabilities from birth complications are even more frequent.
Mothers and
babies die because of the restrictions of poverty. Most
deliveries must occur at home in the absence of prenatal care,
education, or a trained birth attendant. Hospitals are far away,
ill equiped, and costly.
Maison de Naissance - literally, "House of Birth" - is a
maternity center which is attempting to overcome the most
important barriers which deny healthcare to poor mothers and
their babies in Haiti. Its location in a remote location among a
community of extreme poverty allows mothers and babies who are
most in need to take advantage of modern medical
care in the context and hospitality of a culturally appropriate,
safe, welcoming, and friendly home.
GlobeMed of UMKC is committed to assisting the Maison de
Naissance and its vision by providing requested equipment on a
regular basis. Supplies sent will help give obstetrical
care, prenatal and postnatal care, newborn and pediatric medical
care to these mothers and their new babies. In September of
2004, we were able to successfully assemble 150 health
kits and other miscellaneous equipment, and these were sent with
the help of Dr. Stan Shaffer, our Faculty Advisor and MN's
Program Director. In December of
2004, we arranged for the donation of 2,000 doses of Vitamin K
for newborns, as well as 20 boxes of other medications. We
look forward to continuing to contribute to the cause of the Maison de Naissance.
