Constitution and By-Laws of Model United Nations
of the University of Missouri - Kansas City
***Note: The 2004-2005 UMKC-Model UN members voted to amend the following constitution. It will be updated once it becomes available***
Article I - Name
The name of the organization is the “Model United Nations at the
University of Missouri - Kansas City” hereafter referred to as Model UN-UMKC.
Article II - Purpose
The purpose of the organization will be to educate the UMKC campus regarding
the working of the United Nations and increase awareness of Global Issues.
Article III - Membership
Membership and activities are open to all currently enrolled students
regardless of race, color, creed, sex, sexual
orientation, age, national origin, disability or
Vietnam era veteran’s status.
Article IV - Faculty Advisor
Model UN-UMKC shall seek out a qualified faculty, staff,
or community member to sever as liaison with the university administration on
matters related to Model UN-UMKC. The advisor will sever as ombudsman for any
issues or disputes arising from the membership.
Article V - Organization & Executive Committee
Section I:
The affairs of the Model UN-UMKC will be organized and managed by the
General Assembly.
Section II:
Members who would like to run for an office in the General Assembly have to
maintain an active Model UN-UMKC membership for at least one semester. The term
of office is one year.
The General Assembly shall be comprised of at least 2 of the following:
a. General Secretary
b. Head of Human Rights Council
Article VI - General Body & Annual Meeting
Section I:
The total membership of the Model UN-UMKC will constitute the General
Assembly.
Section II:
The Model UN-UMKC will hold at least one General Assembly meeting every
semester and elect its officers at this meeting.
Article VII - Finances
Section I:
The books of account shall be kept up to date and open to the inspection of
the University auditor.
The Model UN-UMKC will be financed by contribution, donations, membership dues
and other sources consistent with the purpose of the Model UN-UMKC.
Section II:
The finances of the Model UN-UMKC will be budgeted and approved by the
General Assembly.
Section III:
The fiscal year of the Model UN-UMKC will begin with the UMKC fiscal year on
July 1st and end on the thirtieth of June.
Article VIII – Amendments
The Constitution and the By-laws may be amended by the voting members
provided that:
a) The proposed amendment is presented to the General Secretary fourteen days
prior to the next meeting of the General Assembly.
b) It is approved by the General Assembly by a simple majority.
The proposed amendment shall then be presented to eligible members and shall be
adopted if it receives affirmative votes from three-fourths of the voting
members.
Article
IX – Constitutional Amendments
It is further understood that if this organization desires at any time in
the future to change in any way the provisions of this charter, that before such
action is taken, the organization will submit for approval to the Student
Government Association and the Student Life Office every detail of the desired
changes to be made. This new constitution, when accepted, will take precedence
over the former constitution and the former constitution will be void.
