STA Events!!!
Shear Madness!!!
Shear Madness is our biggest event of the year! This is the STA "fundrazor" to raise money for children with cancer to attend Camp Quality, an area summer camp, free of charge. Over the course of two months (December and January), students, faculty, and staff are asked to raise money from friends, family, and alumni. On the day of the actual event, any students, faculty, and staff can set their price — on their hair, that is — to have their heads shaved. Individuals who raised money before the event use it to bid on their friends to have them SHAVE THEIR HEAD!!! If the price is met, they have their head shaved! If not, they get to keep their hair, but we still keep bidding money! Shear Madness takes place at the dental school over the lunch hour. Everyone who attends has a blast! Come and help us raise money for these kids and get a free haircut!!! Last year we raised over $8,000 during Shear Madness!!!

Olathe Clinic

Olathe Clinic offers discounted dental services to those in need in the Olathe area. Dental students volunteer on Monday evenings during the year. [One time unit can be earned each time a student volunteers at the Olathe Clinic.]
Score One for Health
Score One is a cooperative screening sponsored by former Kansas City Chiefs defensive back, Deron Cherry. We help out by sending at least two dental students to each inner city elementary school on each screening date. We act as advisors to medical students, showing them how to perform proper oral screenings and answering any questions they may have about the process. Last year’s screenings served over 15,000 children in the Greater Kansas City area.
Ronald McDonald House Dinners
Every six weeks, STA volunteers prepare dinner for the families staying at the local Ronald McDonald House across from the UMKC School of Dentistry. We know they have more important things to think about other than dinner, so we help out by making them a warm meal at the end of the day!
Youth Friends
STA members volunteer in a program called Youth Friends in which adults in Kansas City are paired with an elementary school student in their area. Volunteers mentor these students over their lunch hour by helping them with homework, playing games, talking and just showing that they care.
Tots ’N Teeth
Tots ‘N Teeth was launched in 2008. Volunteer dentists and students come together at the UMKC School of Dentistry on a Saturday to perform oral screenings on toddlers and young children. This is a great opportunity to work with kids and educate parents on the importance of their child’s oral health.
Team Smile
Team Smile is an organization dedicated to providing high-quality dental care to children, while encouraging volunteerism in the dental community. Each year, a pro sports team sponsors Team Smile in conjunction with their season. In this past, the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals have been sponsors. The event usually involves free dental treatment, oral screenings and patient education. Area volunteer dentists treat the patients, and students help with treatment, assisting or other vital functions
